This program offers students in-depth skills to explore Yoga as a vehicle for vibrant health, self-transformation, and personal empowerment. Our curriculum includes a unique blend of alignment based vinyasa flow, a solid foundation in Hatha Yoga and 200 hours of instruction offered within a therapeutic framework. The instruction will cover a wide range of yoga techniques including yoga postures, anatomy, relaxation, breath awareness, pranayama, meditations to calm the mind, contemplations to transform limiting tendencies into life affirming thought patterns, and the application of clear principles of alignment to create safety, balance and freedom in yoga poses.

Students explore concepts from Ayurveda, the Upanishads, Patanjali and the Chakra System as frameworks for the application of yoga as a journey towards radiant health and wellbeing. The asana emphasis includes both level one/two alignment based vinyasa flow sequencing as well as gentler and restorative variations. Rather than offer standard sequencing or rigid methodologies, students are exposed to frameworks that inspire each trainee to adapt the practices, awaken their creativity and find their own authentic voice as a teacher. Graduates of this program feel empowered to teach a variety of yoga class types, including: all levels vinyasa yoga, alignment-based classes, yoga foundations, senior, gentle, and restorative.

The Big Island is a land of myths and legends that are never really far from our minds, since we are always conscious of the mountains, the jungle, the sea and especially the volcano -- the natural elements that gave rise to the legends and myths themselves. According to Hawaiian legends, Hawaii's Big Island is the home of Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire. For many years Pele shaped and formed her new abode, using red-hot lava to create her unique fortress. Early Hawaiians respected and honored Pele, and made offerings to please her or placate her wrath. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was created to preserve the region's unique volcanic features, its early human history and the plant and animal life that is part of this special bioregion.

Kalani Oceanside Retreat is a perfect location to immerse yourself in the teachings of the Therapeutic Yoga Teacher Training. The retreat center is located on 120 magnificent acres of tropical beauty on the southeast coast of Hawaii Island, known as the "Big Island".

Three delicious and healthy meals are served each day and ample opportunities exist to enjoy Kalani's grounds which includes a pool, hot tub and watsu therapy pool, or stroll along the coastline taking in its stunning views. The retreat center is a 45 minute drive from the airport in Hilo or a 2.5 hour drive from the airport in Kona.

Room options vary from privates with own bath to shared accommodations (doubles and triples).

Lodge rooms

The three two-level lodges or Hales (pronounced Ha'-lay, Hawaiian for "house") house several rooms on each floor with access to common areas on both levels which are sometimes used for classes. They are on the central lawn close to the Dining Lanai.

Kalani is a retreat center and accommodations are simple, filled with original art, no telephones or televisions are provided and internet access, although available, is limited, making this a perfect place to immerse yourself in the teachings and lifestyle of yoga.

Three times a day, guests and staff are summoned by the call of the conch to dine on our open-air lanai (veranda). At this central gathering place, you can experience the daily rhythms of assembly and departure reminiscent of ancient village life.

Kalani cuisine encompasses a variety of styles including Thai, Indian, and Italian. Our chefs have extensive training and a common interest in creating healthful and delicious meals.

We celebrate the abundance of Hawaii by serving local tropical fruits and vegetables and fresh caught fish. Seafood is often served at dinner (chicken and beef are served occasionally), and vegetarians are well cared for.

Most importantly, our chefs firmly believe that the care and love invested in the cuisine is transmitted to the diner, and everything is prepared with aloha.
