Our inspired team will share their knowledge and passions with you so you can feel supported and encouraged, whatever your level. The diverse and full weekly schedule (over 21 classroom hours) is delivered at a pace that allows you to do it all and still have ample time for additional therapies and exploration, or be more selective and just relax– we know it’s your holiday, you decide.


Yoga

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced student, our instructors provide modifications and can work with a variety of levels to ensure that you get the most from your class.


Hatha yoga

Hatha yoga is the oldest form of yoga, a discipline created in India about 5,000 years ago. Hatha yoga focuses on relaxing the body and the mind through deep stretching and abdominal breathing. It can also be more dynamic, depending on the teacher.


Ashtanga yoga

Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic, powerful form of yoga. There is a set sequence of postures, each posture designed to prepare the body for the next pose. Asthanga yoga focuses on movement with the breath. Power Yoga and Vinyasa Yoga have their origins in Asthanga yoga. In the classes you will follow Series 1 (the sequence of postures set), and learn about bandhas and Ujjayi breath, a relaxed diaphragmatic style of breathing. The classes are appropriate for all levels, however those with injuries, or pregnancy should consult the instructor before taking part in ashtanga yoga.


Kundalini yoga

Welcome to a wonderful, powerful path to a healthy, happy, holy life! Kundalini yoga precisely and consciously combines breath, mudra, eye focus, mantra, body locks and postures to balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, expand lung capacity and purify the blood. It brings balance to the body, mind and soul and it has the effect of uplifting the spirit.

The Kundalini experience does not mean you have gone into a deep breathless trance and are beyond this world. It integrates you more fully with reality and gives you a broader vision and sensitivity so that you can act more efficiently. Approach your practice with sacredness and simplicity. Your Yoga practice can be a compass, indicating true north – your destinity, pointing you in the right direction.

Each Kundalini Yoga session or class with Frauke involves practices that touch all aspects of your being. Kundalini Yoga goes right into your heart.


Vinyasa flow yoga

Vinyasa flow is a dynamic form of yoga which involves moving from one pose to another in a constant flow, with the breath. This form of yoga builds strength and stamina and requires a certain level of yoga experience.


Pilates

The primary physical focus of Pilates is on building core strength to improve alignment, posture and overall strength. It was originally developed by Joseph Pilates to aid rehabilitation after injury.


Meditation

Meditation has many different forms and ways to approach the practice. It generally involves a stilling and quietening of the mind that is deeply relaxing and promotes health and healing. You will experience several types of meditation, from cleansing to breathe focused meditations, to help promote stillness and mindfulness. These are optional practices available over the course of the week.


Location

This yoga retreat will take place at Surya Retreat located in the village of Villaverde. The villa is beautifully situated nestled amongst the volcanoes with views to the sea. Offering different levels of accommodation to suit all budgets, we are sure to have the perfect place for you to lay your head.

We believe in the power of proper rest and relaxation, which is why careful thought has gone into every detail of the bedrooms and apartments we offer.We have hand selected each bed with your comfort in mind, and furnishings have been chosen to complement the beautiful ´Spanish finca´ style of the villa. Here you will find a haven of rejuvenation, the perfect complement to your daily practice.

A bright, open wooden floored yoga shala is an inviting space in which to deepen your practice and offers a true immersion into mindful movement. Pure bliss.

For the Pilates lovers, our apparatus studio allows you to schedule private sessions with our expert teachers, this careful one to one tuition allowing time to focus on your personal needs and to elevate your private practice.


Grounds

The villa boasts the best of Canarian architecture with white washed walls and natural wood beams, the building frames a beautiful courtyard flushed with flowers and palm trees.

The kitchen and lounge are the heart of the villa, their warmth and appeal boosted by a wood burning fire and stunning views to the ocean and surrounding countryside.

The ample gardens offer large swimming pool and sun lounging area, hammocks provide welcome shade and patio chairs invite you to relax with a book or to catch up with new friends.

The site has ample parking should you wish to explore the island with a hire car. There are walking paths and a bus stop close by, with an hourly service to Corralejo and Cotillo. A transfer is provided to the beach once a week.


Food

Sitting at the very heart centre of the property, is Jo’s ´Truly Healthy, Truly Delicious` kitchen. Love, laughter, and careful attention to detail, the absolute essence of the Azulfit experience, are brought to life here with creativity and flare in the shape of the bountiful meals we offer. Here the nutrition so important to a holistic lifestyle is planned, prepped and shared, the kitchen team lovingly crafting balanced meals and menus to boost the weekly programme.

The kitchen supports a workshop space, where guests can join nutrition talks. Jo Dombernowsky, our head nutritionist and international cookbook author, shares her passion and knowledge for all things healthy, nutritious and delicious and invites you to learn healthy tips and recipes from the Azulfit menu, to take a little of the week in paradise home.

After the morning session you will sit down to a delicious homemade brunch including fresh fruit salad, marmalades, bread, yogurt, muesli and granola, plus a hot dish of the day (eggs, pancakes, porridge) plus your choice of drinks including water, coffee, tea and herbal tea.

Five delicious and healthy evening meals are included; bursting with flavour and colour, they are consistent with our overall vibrant retreat philosophy, healthful food that you will be inspired to make when you get back home. All meals are vegetarian with regular vegan and gluten-free options. Specific dietary requirements can be catered for with advanced notice.

On the remaining evenings you are free to enjoy the nearby award-winning tapas and seafood restaurants, there are also self-catering facilities in some of the villa apartments should you prefer to prepare something for yourself.


Holistic treatments

Included in your stay is a one hour full body massage – the perfect way to wind down and relax into your wellbeing holiday. You can book additional treatments, including massages, beauty treatments and complementary therapies to make sure you go home beautifully rested and pampered.

Airport transfers

Transfers are not included but can be arranged.


How to get there

Fuerteventura airport is 35 minutes from the Surya Retreat. We recommend that you allow us to organise a transfer for you. This will ensure that you have no waiting around at the airport and that your driver knows exactly where you are going, allowing you to get to us and settle in as smoothly and stress free as possible.

The cost is as follows:

  • 1 Guest – 40 euros
  • 2 Guests – 20 euros per person
  • 3 Guests or more- 15 euros per person


We always try to arrange shared transfers for guests arriving at similar times to keep your costs down. 

Coming by public transport is not recommended as you will need to take three buses to get to the Surya Retreat (bus number 3 to Puerto del Rosario, changing to the number 6 to Corralejo then the number 8 to Villaverde).


FAQ

I am a solo traveler, is this ok?

The majority of our guests travel to us on their own to take a much needed break away from the pace of day-to-day life. You will meet other like-minded people who are with us for a healthy break. At the villa, brunch and five evening meals are included and the group dines and socialises together. On the remaining evenings guests often choose to enjoy meals together at one of the excellent restaurants a short walk away. You also have the option to stay in and self-cater. During free time, some guests like to spend time exploring the island together, other guests are happy to enjoy the beautiful beaches and down time on their own – whatever your needs are, Azul offers a fun and safe environment for solo travellers of all ages.


Is there a pool at the retreat?

We offer a plunge pool at the retreat, to relax in and take a dip to cool down. The pool is not a lap pool (4m x 3m). The ocean is beautiful and warm enough to swim most of the year. We have sun loungers and beach towels for hire for 2 euros for the week.


I have never done Pilates or yoga before, is this ok?

We offer classes for levels from beginner to advanced, so join us if you would like to try Pilates or yoga for the first time. We offer a variety of yoga classes so you can sample and work out the best style for you, and our Pilates instructors work with you to safely help you progress and challenge yourself each week.


How many people do you typically have for a week?

Group size varies from six to eighteen people. We like to keep group sizes small as this allows individuals to have more attention and be better equipped to accomplish their goals. If the group exceeds sixteen students, or the group has mixed abilities, we will often set up extra classes to allow more individual attention to each student.


Can you accommodate special dietary requirements?

Azul can accommodate a variety of special dietary requirements, including gluten free, dairy free, and vegetarian diets. We try to accommodate most food allergies within our brunches and evening meals. Please indicate this on the booking form when you book your allergies and we can correspond with you directly about them. If you have any other dietary requirements please contact us and we can discuss your needs.


I have an illness/injury, will I be able to take part in your classes?

In all of our classes you are encouraged to go at your own pace and to listen to your body. We try, where possible to take note of any injuries or illnesses you have and offer you suitable modifications and adjustments. In cases or serious injury, illness, or pregnancy we ask that you book our wellbeing class package, offering you private tuition, at your own pace, for your wellbeing. If you have any serious doubts about attending the retreat, you should seek advice from your doctor.


What kind of yoga and pilates equipment does Azul provide?

Azul supplies yoga mats, yoga blankets, magic circles, straps and blocks, where necessary, as well as any additional equipment needed for the specific session.


Can I book with Azul anytime?

Our retreats start each Saturday afternoon, and run for 7 nights, with checkout the following Saturday. Checkout is at 11:00am but we are happy for you to stay on site through the day if you have an evening flight. We try, where possible, to accommodate arrival dates early in our set weeks, as flights to the island can be difficult to find at certain times of year. Long weekends and long breaks can be accommodated where possible. 


What are check-in and check-out times?

Check-in and check-out times vary to accommodate people’s arrival times. Check-in is generally from 12 noon through to 9pm. Guests are welcome to stay in their accommodation until 11am on busy arrival days, and we ask that departing guests place their belongings in a secure area so that the rooms may be prepared for new arrivals.


Are there laundry services at Villa Azul?

We will gladly do your laundry on request for five euros per load. We are eco-friendly and sun dry all laundry. Depending on the weather expect one to two days for the service.


Is there internet access?

We try to create a mellow environment away from the stresses of busy life – however, we do appreciate that some guests would like to access the internet during their stay with us. Wifi is available in the lounge for five euros for the week.


What should I bring with me?

  • Warm jumper for the evenings and more warm clothes during winter months for breezy evenings
  • Beach towel (Beach towels can be provided by Azul on request for two euros. Bath towels are provided)

  • Azul accepts no responsibility for cancellation due to flight companies cancelling flights or the clients inability / validity to travel. This is usually covered under your own travel insurance so please arrange adequate travel insurance at the time of booking.

Frauke Behrens Kundalini

Frauke is a real reflection of what she is teaching, and each class with her is an experience. Originally from Germany, Frauke has lived and worked in Spain for more than 30 years.

Frauke has been teaching and practicing Kundalini Yoga for many years. She is certified through the Kundalini Research Institute, teaching in the style of Yogi Bhajan and is a full member of the Spanish Association of Kundalini Yoga.

Frauke is passionate about what she does and each class and meditation she leads help us to connect and to cleanse. You will enjoy every minute of her class, from the gentle meditation through to the energetic asanas, to the final relaxation.

Frauke reminds us to connect and center, to know that life is to be enjoyed, and it’s a great message.

Valentina is the principal yoga teacher at Villa Azul from September to December 2014. Is an inspiring teacher, and blends classical Hatha Yoga adapted for all levels with vinyasa yoga to make classes fun, challenging and inspiring. She connects with each and every student and her warm, open demeanor allow her to really see what each student needs. Having trained using ancient Indian methods learned in her various studies all over the world. Classes with Valentina improve agility, muscle tone, strength, flexibility and breath control.

Valentina believes in yoga’s physical and mental benefits, providing a holistic harmony in our bodies through asanas and pranayama. This helps to promote a balance between the nervous system and endocrine system, then directly influencing all organs in the body, providing an improvement in overall health and wellbeing.

Valentina loves living and teaching yoga in Fuerteventura where she can surf, kitesurf and body board, and feel the benefits of her yoga practice through improved coordination and flexibility, and sees that yoga improves self-confidence and helps us feel connected. She strongly believes in yoga as a way of life, which can only be learned through experience.


Alex Estornel Principal 

Pilates Instructor, Program coordinator

Azul is proud to welcome Alex as our resident Pilates teacher at our Fuerteventura center of Excellence from 1 July 2014. Alex has been a fitness instructor for over 10 years with certification from International Sports and Sciences Association. He has taught Pilates for over 6 years with certification from Equinox Pilates and over two years of study under Master Instructor Carrie Macy, who is a Romana Kryzanowska alumnus.

Alex comes from a dance and acting background and he is well known for his work in the TV, film, and stage industry, performing with recording artists such as Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Cher and Gloria Estefan. He has also featured in numerous fitness videos by Beach Bodies and performed with the Metropolitan Ballet Company, and Liz Imperio’s Instincts Contemporary Dance Company in Los Angeles.

Alex likes to merge his classical knowledge with a progressive contemporary style. He is relaxed and down to earth, but will definitely challenge and enthuse you with his teaching style. Be ready to work hard, make great progress and to experience Pilates taught in a fun and challenging American style, from one of the USA’s finest.

Jo Dombernowsky is in charge of the menu at the retreat and inspires us all with her ability to make really healthy food taste really good. Having studied nutrition for many years, Jo knows the power of food to improve health, energy and wellbeing and prepares her meals to do exactly that. She loves to pass on her knowledge and passion for food throughout the retreat and in her workshops and nutrition weeks.

Originally from Denmark, Jo is quickly becoming the Canary Island’s go to expert on all things nutrition and you may catch her being interviewed on the radio. She has successfully campaigned to improve nutritional education within schools, and is experiencing widespread support for her amazing cookbook, ‘Truly Healthy, Truly Delicious‘.

Jo is also an advanced practitioner and inspiring instructor of Stott Pilates. Her classes focus strongly on understanding correct form, body awareness and body synergy, giving students the understanding and skill to progress in their Pilates safely and quickly.

Jo’s passion for fitness and overall wellbeing shine through in all that she does, and we are delighted to have her as part of the team.

Erika also believes in the effectiveness and benefits of Pilates practice, for rehabilitation and strengthening. She sees how complementary the yoga and Pilates methods are, and when used together they allow us to use our bodies to their full potential, strong, flexible and free from injury.

Erika loves cooking and believes in the spiritual value of food – she knows that nourishhment for body and soul are interconnected. For Erika, vegetarian food is the only way to grow, following the path of yoga to a more spiritual, healty life.


Paco Borges Associate

Tai Chi Chuan Instructor, Villa Azul

Paco is from Fuerteventura, born and raised, and has been practicing martial arts for over 20 years and tai chi chuan for ten years. His titles are awarded by Tai Chi Healthways, San Diego California, from the prestigious master Jesse Tsao and ‘Asociación Canaria de Artes Integrales’ (ACAI). He has travelled around the world gaining in experience and enriching his practice and knowledge.

To this day Paco continues learning from his teacher and is dedicated to continuing his learning and development along this path. Paco is passionate about the positive effects of tai chi and is dedicated to helping our guests benefit physically, mentally and spiritually through the practice of tai chi chain. His fun and challenging tai chi classes are the perfect complement to the Azul philosophy.
