By far the biggest risk in Costa Rica is related to the less than modern roads, and the less than careful drivers. This risk can be minimized by driving only during daylight hours until you become accustomed to the "exotic" driving conditions, wearing seatbelts, and trying to take your longer drives in the morning if traveling during the rainy season. Other possible health concerns may include: Water is safe to drink in most of Costa Rica. However, bottled water is recommended for newcomers. Malaria is not a danger for travelers in Costa Rica. According to the Ministry of Health, there are only a few isolated areas of the country where cases have been reported. Cholera has not been a serious problem in Costa Rica because of a concerted effort on the part of health officials to identify and treat any cases imported from other countries. Mosquitoes are usually not a problem. Bug spray is often useful at sunrise or sunset during the rainy season, when the "no see 'ems" especially enjoy a nip of your feet and legs. What kind of health care is available in the area? A hospital managed by the Costa Rican government is located 15 minutes from the hotel. In addition, bilingual doctors are available 24/7 for any kind of emergency. During which months does it rain most? Costa Rica's Pacific coast enjoys a classic, predictable monsoon climate - i.e. there are only two distinct seasons: rainy and dry. Normally the rainy season runs from mid-April to mid-November. During this time, mornings are usually clear and it often rains in the early evenings.

    "Wonderful!"
I went to Hollis Spa yesterday with my family for my mother’s birthday, since it was Valentine’s Day I booked in advance but they seem to be very accommodating to walk ins. The front desk coordinator (I am so bad with remembering names but I think she is there most days) was super friendly and helpful, she did a wonderful job arranging our appointments and making sure we were comfortable. The treatments were AMAZING we all had a very relaxing time. I highly recommend the massages, I got a Thai massage and it was heavenly.

  • "Friendly and prompt"
This was my first visit to Holis Wellness. It was just up the street from where we were staying so convenient for me. I had stopped by earlier and walked in to get information and a feel for the place. I was welcomed with a smile and an on the spot consultation regarding a facial that would best suit my skin. Not knowing our schedule for the week, I told them I would call back. They were very nice when I called and were able to accommodate that same afternoon. The treatment room is nice, but not luxury. My therapist did not speak English and with my limited Spanish, there was little talk, but I enjoyed the quiet and the soothing music. The facial was good. My expectations may have been high since it was called Deluxe but I was pleased enough for the price. Other spas in the area I had checked were in a higher $ range. - Tripadvisor Review

    "It's All About the Teacher"
i visited Holis spa to try the Pilates but found it too advanced so decided to do the Restorative Yoga. I did not see the word Aerial so when i arrived was surprised to see all the hanging hammocks. but this trip was all about trying things so i stayed for the class and absolutely loved it. in fact, i signed up for two private sessions because i found it so restorative in so many ways. I must admit that one of the main reasons, or in fact the main reason, was the teacher Valentina who was magic and embraced you into her fold creating a safe and enveloping energy. She is a gifted and knowledgeable person and i loved working with her. - Tripadvisor Review

  • "Amazing Couples Massage!"
I took my husband for his first ever massage here on Feb, 16. I have had many massages before and was very impressed with the ladies here. Amazing is the only word to describe it. I stopped at a different spa down the road a few days before and instantly got a very creepy vibe. So I got on trip advisors and looked for the #1 spa in the area. I found Holis and sent an email request for an appointment. I was a little worried that we would not be able to get in as the website prefers a 48 hour reservation but they were able to get us in the same day. They were quick to email back about the reservations but after the last spa encounter I stopped by to check it out first. When I walked into Holis the ladies were very friendly and inviting I had no worries we would be in good hands. We will be visiting Holist again on our next trip to Costa Rica. - Tripadvisor Review

  • "AMAZING!!"
My husband and I both left our massages saying those were the best massages we have ever had. I get them every few weeks in Canada and we get them on every holiday, and these were the best. I can’t remember the last time I was that relaxed. It was absolutely wonderful. We rebooked again for later this week they were so good. The price is extremely reasonable as well. Spa is in a great location and very nice inside. - Tripadvisor Review

"One of the best massages I’ve had in a long time"
Back home I get a massage from my favorite masseuse almost every week, and whenever I travel, I try out the local spas. Rarely do they live up to my standards, but Carla from Holis Wellness Center & Spa stands out. The service is very professional (e.g. filling out a form about previous injuries, sensitive areas, etc). Not cheap but well worth the money. - Tripadvisor Review

  • "Spa day with my daughter!"
My daughter treated me to this spa day after traveling to Costa Rica. My mud wrap and full body massage was just the thing I needed to ease me into my vacation and relieve the stress of traveling. Carla expertly provided my services, finishing up with a pedicure. She was friendly, knowledgeable and very gracious. While this spa does not have the amenities of a whirlpool, pool or expansive rooms, it was still an incredible treat for the body, soul and mind! - Tripadvisor Review

    "Excellent"
I went to this spa for a pedicure. It was a good pedicure, but nothing spectacular. Prices in Costa Rica seem to have gone up substantially over the last many years, and while this pedicure was nice, I didn’t feel it was worth the price of $45, considering what I pay at home for a more comfortable experience. The nail trimming, painting and foot massaging was excellent! No lower leg massage which I had expected with previous pedi’s. The chair is a outdoor recliner lawn chair, but it was surprising, very comfortable and relaxing. There was not much colour selection, but I liked what chose. The woman who painted my nails was lovely. For an overall spa experience, it average. For the the nail painting and foot massage, excellent! - Tripadvisor
