Course description

Attending an Island yoga retreat is to experience a return to simplicity. Life and yoga on enchanted Koh Yoa Noi with its friendly locals and outstanding natural beauty provides a holistic experience that both rejuvenates the body and restores emotional balance. Morning yoga sessions tend to be more energizing, afternoon classes are often quite gentle in nature. With this daily combination you will receive a sense of what it means to embody ‘graceful strength’ in your life. Plenty of leisure time between our yoga classes allows you to discover the islands’ customs and culture, adventures and cuisine. You can cruise the spectacular Phang Nga bay, explore the island by bicycle or scooter, take a Thai cookery class or just relax in the hammock or get a massage. The island is completely safe, the locals are very friendly and polite…it’s remarkable to walk down the main street in the market and see every motor scooter with its key in the ignition! Optional evening activities may include: family dinners, kirtan (group chanting) guided meditations and spiritual/special interest movie nights. These activities are subject to numbers and interest.

About the place

Koh Yao Noi is located in the Phang-Nga bay between Phuket and Krabi. It remains one of the rare gems of S. E. Asia; an island still largely undiscovered by mainstream tourism with pristine beaches, friendly locals and outstanding natural beauty: it really is the perfect retreat hideaway. Our base is Ulmer’s Nature lodge in Tha Khao village, a quiet beachfront resort run by Ning and her ever smiling crew of family and friends who put their heart and soul into making your stay special. During this yoga retreat, accommodation will be at our Nature Lodge resort, or if we are full, at a recommended resort of similar standard nearby. All accommodations are within a 5 minute walk of the yoga sala. We have 4 types of accommodations to choose from. For the cost conscious traveler there are dorm beds and private rooms in our budget house. Our comfort bungalows are more spacious with a fan, hot shower and mosquito net, while the a/c bungalows add a little more luxury to the retreat experience.

Food

All yogis take the delicious and hearty breakfast at the lodge. You can also order snacks, shakes, lunch and dinner at the lodge or visit other restaurants in the village and around the island. There is a water station at the restaurant where you can refill your water bottles.

Other activities

You can rent bicycles, kayaks and motor scooters at the lodge to explore the island. If you need a taxi, just speak to Ning and she’ll organize one for you. Our local village is called Tha Khao and is a 10 minute walk along the beach from the nature lodge.Tha Khao has a “sell everything” store, food stalls and an internet cafe. The main road around the island is a 20km loop. There’s one real town halfway around the loop called “the market” which has about 1000 inhabitants. The market has a 7-11, a post office, police station, bank, internet cafes, local and tourist restaurants, clothes shopping, a pharmacy and an ATM. There is another ATM 2 km’s from the Nature lodge but bring cash as these machines sometimes don’t work! There are beaches all down the eastern side of the island - our side.. and amazing sunrises; the western side has mangroves with good bird watching and stunning sunsets. With plenty of free time during the day, you can explore remote beaches and lively markets, rice paddies and rubber plantations. This is also the time to treat yourself to a massage or take a Thai cookery course. Recreation options include swimming and snorkelling, hiking and biking, rock climbing and kayaking.

How to get there

It’s generally easier to access the island via Phuket, which has more flight and ferry options than Krabi. If you fly into Phuket, the last island ferry leaves for the island at 5.30pm. If you fly into Krabi the last ferry leaves for the island at 5.15pm. It’s easier to access the island via Phuket which has more flight and ferry options than Krabi. Flying into Phuket, the last ferry departs at 5.40pm, from Krabi the last ferry departs at 5.30pm. From Phuket 1. From the airport take a taxi to Bang Rong Pier. Approximately 25 minutes – 600 THB. 2. Catch the ferry to Koh Yao Noi 30 minutes by speedboat – 200 THB per person, 1 hour by long tail – 120 THB per person. Boat times – the first ferry leaves at 7.30 am and they run approx. every hour till 5.40 pm 3. Take a shared taxi to Ulmars Nature Lodge (Island Yoga). 20 minutes - 150 THB per person. Don’t worry, there are always taxi’s waiting at the pier, no need to pre-book one. From Krabi 1. From the airport take a taxi to Tha Lane Pier. Approximately 45 minutes – 700-800 THB. 2. Catch the ferry to Koh Yao Noi. Ferries leave every hour starting at 9 am and finishing at 5.30pm - 30 minutes by speedboat THB 200 - 1 hour by long tail THB 150. 3. Take a taxi to Ulmar’s Nature Lodge (Island Yoga). 5 minute taxi ride costs THB 50 pp or you can walk to the Nature Lodge in 15 minutes. 4. Bus option from Krabi town This route is a little more complex; please ask locals or the tourist information in Krabi town for bus times to Tha Lane pier.

David Sharpe
UK born David lives in Thailand where he established “Island Yoga” retreats on Koh Yao Noi. David has studied yoga/meditation and Tai Chi in India, China, S.E. Asia, USA and Europe. Although he considers himself a serious student of spiritual disciplines, he has a lighthearted and often humorous approach to teaching and, through his engaging style; he can make seemingly complex subjects simple, fun and interesting. His deepest passion is teaching movement in meditation. Be it based in yoga, dynamic chanting, Tai Chi Qi Gong or even rock climbing, you’ll be sure to come away from his classes with a greater appreciation for the “Art of Meditation”.

 

Tea Worrall
Tea comes originally from Finland, but has lived around Asia and Middle East since 2003. She has been actively involved with Yoga practice since 2005. She has studied and practiced Yoga with several renowned teachers. Tea frequently attends workshops and training; further developing and updating her knowledge of Yoga practice and philosophy as well as anatomy and Pranayama. She has been teaching Yoga classes and workshops since 2009 in China, Malaysia, Qatar and Thailand. She emphasizes the importance of correct alignment and breathing in her classes, which are taught with great joy and enthusiasm, without forgetting the traditional spirit of Yoga.

 

Anja Maier
Gentle and kind, yet strong and passionate. Words that describe Anja\\\'s nature, her classes and her way to relate with people. Anja is an authentic yoga teacher with a calming and nurturingenergy, who expresses her creativity and compassion in her classes. She loves to share her passion for traveling and living a healthy lifestyle on and off the mat. Anja\\\'s slow flow vinyasa classes are food for your body, mind & soul. She skillfully translates theancient knowledge of Hatha Yoga to the modern world, she knows to raise your spiritual awareness and her personal goal is to inspire you and make you feel just a little happier. To get you out of your daily routine and into the present moment she likes to start her classes by guiding you through some gentle pranayama and meditation. Dynamic and energizing sequences are followed by conscious and grounding asanas always keeping the right balance between flexibility and strength, freedom and stability, flow and static, yin and yang. Anja loves to weave storytelling and proper alignment into her yoga teachings. Anja has been practicing and studying yoga around the world completing her 300h+ teacher training at Yoga Vidya Gurukul in Nasik, India and holding an advanced certification from Jivani Yoga in Koh Phangan, Thailand (RYS 500h). Her love for people, nature, traveling, yoga, nutrition and alternative healing techniques have led her to travel and study with teachers from different.

    I LOVE Island Yoga and Nourish Cafe! The vibe is awesome and the Island Yoga tribe are amazing, kind souls. They truly make you feel welcome. I visit Aruba every year (so grateful for that!) and was fortunate to be able to practice this week for several classes and cry after Savasana in Rachel’s class. 💜 Eating a plant-based diet on the island has its challenges, but Nourish Cafe can meet your needs and also provides a beautiful space to relax or catch up on emails following Yoga practice.     "The two of us did a four day/ three night mini retreat with Island Yoga; the staff were great, the room was minimalistic but clean, the practices were really diverse but all levels were able to join in as all the instructors were great for giving adjustments and options. The food, especially the free breakfast, was delicious and the only thing we would consider a downside was the beach as it was not really picturesque BUT there was a pool and beaches nearby so that was a very minimal issue.     "It was my first yoga retreat, even though I have been practicing yoga in the past five years, and it was the first yoga retreat for my husband as well, and second time practicing yoga for him. We both loved it, I learned a lot from the teachers, and my husband finally fell in love with yoga (I have been trying to get him into it for a while). Ronnie and her husband Dimitry were awesome with the yoga classes and their sound healing classes as well. Every teacher was unique and taught us something different. Breakfast was delicious every day. The receptionists were very helpful and friendly, as well as the restaurant staff. We left the lodge very rested, happy and satisfied!     This retreat was everything I hoped it would be plus way way more! Every teacher has something different to bring to the sessions and there is so much more on offer than just the yoga, the day trips island hopping and kayaking are well organised and the Tai Chi in the mornings to start the day is simply amazing and everyone is very lovely and helpful.     "Island yoga has a great variety of experienced yoga teachers and friendly locals who staff the resort.
