About the place

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a coastal town in Talamanca in Limón Province in southeastern Costa Rica, known simply as Puerto Viejo to locals. It is a popular tourist destination. It is known in the surfing community for the biggest and most powerful wave in Costa Rica, known as Salsa Brava. It is also home to beautiful beaches, such as Playa Chiquita, Playa Negra, and Punta Uva, which are a few of Costa Rica's most spectacular beaches which can be found between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo. Manzanillo is a popular location for kayaking and is 13 km (8 mi) south along the beach. Choose from a stay in one of our ten Caribbean style casitas nestled in the tropical gardens, the guest house with it’s expansive terrace and jungle view or VIP accommodation in a fully equipped sea view house. To fully experience the beauty and magic of the rainforest there are no TVs in the rooms and wifi is available at the restaurant and lounge. All accommodations have fans and screened ventilation allowing for fresh air and Caribbean breezes around the clock. Our sanctuary is set in a 250 acre Costa Rican Rainforest, yet provides you with the comfort and convenience of a modern resort. It comprises a restaurant, a lounge, a spa, three types of accommodations as well as a Gazebo and Jacuzzi. Each of these elements is integrated harmoniously into the Rainforest and is designed to reinforce your connection to nature.

Food

Sitting in the mountain overlooking the Rainforest and Caribbean Sea below, our open-air restaurant provides a dramatic and unique dining experience. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served buffet style with selections ranging from Caribbean fusion, to Mediterranean to Asian to Central American. Most of our cuisine is vegetarian and chicken and fish delicacies are available whenever you choose. Seafood is drawn daily from sea, fruit is purchased from local farmers or picked on site. "Kind Staff"
I came to Costa Rica to experience the nature and have a relaxed vacation. At Samasati the staff was super helpful, friendly, and welcoming (mainly Stephanie, Hanna, David, Venessa and Max) They even packed food for me if I went out of town and didn't make in back to Samasati in time for Lunch/Dinner. David took me on hikes and showed me cool spots in the jungle that was breathtakingly beautiful. I feel the residence where I stayed itself (cottages and bungalows) could have been maintained better. Im a huge outdoorsy person and I have roughed it out many times in the wild, but but for the price paid I'd like a cleaner shelter to stay in. Every night I had multiple huge bugs in my room and/or bed (ants on my bed every night). David was kind enough to get the giant ones out of my bungalow whenever I requested his help. I didn't get fresh towels every day and my room wasn't cleaned everyday by the cleaner as well. The food isn't bad, but wasn't great. To sum up I had a wonderful travel in Costa Rica and I couldn't have stayed in a place more closer to the wild like I wanted. - Google Review

    "OK"
HUGE disparity between their website and reality. We booked a private room and bath, but got the run-down Dragon House which we had to share with strangers. Food was generally OK, but often brown and mushy. Not a single comfortable place to sit or sleep. Be aware that wine and beer cost 7-10 $US - nowhere and by no one will you be told this until you have to settle up! Nice local staff; unresponsive, surly manager. Most of the light bulbs in our casita didn't work. When we asked for an extra lamp, we were refused by this manager. "If I give you a lamp, I'll have to take it from someone else." How about from your palatial residence!? Big WTH moment, among the many. - Google Review

    "Beautiful!"
Great view, relaxing, friendly staff. Dinner costs extra. I was not aware of it till a few days after I checked in. You will need a taxi to and from the retreat unless you leave at 10am and return at 3pm which is when they offer the free shuttle. Taxi drivers do not drive up the hill. You must either call or use the radio at the bottom to call and have one of their drivers come down and get you. Great nature, wildlife, yoga classes, and trails for hiking. - Google Review
