About the place

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a coastal town in Talamanca in Limón Province in southeastern Costa Rica, known simply as Puerto Viejo to locals. It is a popular tourist destination. It is known in the surfing community for the biggest and most powerful wave in Costa Rica, known as Salsa Brava. It is also home to beautiful beaches, such as Playa Chiquita, Playa Negra, and Punta Uva, which are a few of Costa Rica's most spectacular beaches which can be found between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo. Manzanillo is a popular location for kayaking and is 13 km (8 mi) south along the beach. Choose from a stay in one of our ten Caribbean style casitas nestled in the tropical gardens, the guest house with it’s expansive terrace and jungle view or VIP accommodation in a fully equipped sea view house. To fully experience the beauty and magic of the rainforest there are no TVs in the rooms and wifi is available at the restaurant and lounge. All accommodations have fans and screened ventilation allowing for fresh air and Caribbean breezes around the clock. Our sanctuary is set in a 250 acre Costa Rican Rainforest, yet provides you with the comfort and convenience of a modern resort. It comprises a restaurant, a lounge, a spa, three types of accommodations as well as a Gazebo and Jacuzzi. Each of these elements is integrated harmoniously into the Rainforest and is designed to reinforce your connection to nature.

Sitting in the mountain overlooking the Rainforest and Caribbean Sea below, our open-air restaurant provides a dramatic and unique dining experience. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served buffet style with selections ranging from Caribbean fusion, to Mediterranean to Asian to Central American. Most of our cuisine is vegetarian and chicken and fish delicacies are available whenever you choose. Seafood is drawn daily from sea, fruit is purchased from local farmers or picked on site. Organic products are the first choice ingredients.

We strongly recommend if driving a rented vehicle, that you leave the city of San Jose around noon, the latest at 2 p.m. so you arrive to Samasati during daylight hours. From your starting point, get directions to the Guapiles/Limon Highway. This is a road that winds up into the cloudy mountains of Braulio Carrillo’s National Park, before crossing the Santa Clara flatlands into Puerto Limon. Once you get to Limon, please follow directions to Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. Samasati is 30 miles South of Limón, in the direction of Puerto Viejo. It is located in the Hone Creek village(‘s) area. About five miles after passing the Cahuita National Park’s entrance, you’ll find a street in your right hand side, just between the Gas Station of Hone Creek and the supermarket “Pali”. Samasati’s entrance’s gate is about 1/2 mile inland from the main road. Samasati’s restaurant and accommodations are located 1 mile uphill from the entrance(’s) gate. There is a reception(’s) area at the entrance gate. Here you will find out how to proceed with your 4×4 vehicle, or where to park your car (no fee) and wait for a Samasati vehicle if your vehicle is not a 4X4. "Pleasantly Surprised"
I was pleasantly surprised by all of the lovely upgrades and renovations made with the new management!! I stayed two years ago and loved the experience although I noticed somethings and staff needed improvement. Since then, I would read the reviews and dream about going back. Then when I read the owner's caring reply to a reviewer who complained, saying that the resort has had an overhaul since there is new management.....I quickly booked a 7 day solo stay! Soooo nice to go back! The scenery, the rainforest, the yoga, the massages and the hikes were all so wonderful like I remembered them but now there was an amazing vibe and also the staff seemed extra friendly and helpful. The food was good before but now it was amazing with such a fresh selection of fruits and vegetables and flavors. When I sat in that jacuzzi overlooking the water, I felt at peace and I was able to clear my mind. My bungalow felt like a treehouse as I would listen to the leaves rustle in the wind and hear the animals in the midst of this amazing rainforest. There is something truly magical about this resort. - Tripadvisor Review

    "Top Notch"
I came to Costa Rica to experience the nature and have a relaxed vacation. At Samasati the staff was super helpful, friendly, and welcoming (mainly Stephanie, Hanna, David, Venessa and Max) They even packed food for me if I went out of town and didn't make in back to Samasati in time for Lunch/Dinner. David took me on hikes and showed me cool spots in the jungle that was breathtakingly beautiful. I feel the residence where I stayed itself (cottages and bungalows) could have been maintained better. Im a huge outdoorsy person and I have roughed it out many times in the wild, but but for the price paid I'd like a cleaner shelter to stay in. Every night I had multiple huge bugs in my room and/or bed (ants on my bed every night). David was kind enough to get the giant ones out of my bungalow whenever I requested his help. I didn't get fresh towels every day and my room wasn't cleaned everyday by the cleaner as well. The food isn't bad, but wasn't great. To sum up I had a wonderful travel in Costa Rica and I couldn't have stayed in a place more closer to the wild like I wanted. - Google Review
