About the place

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a coastal town in Talamanca in Limón Province in southeastern Costa Rica, known simply as Puerto Viejo to locals. It is a popular tourist destination. It is known in the surfing community for the biggest and most powerful wave in Costa Rica, known as Salsa Brava. It is also home to beautiful beaches, such as Playa Chiquita, Playa Negra, and Punta Uva, which are a few of Costa Rica's most spectacular beaches which can be found between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo. Manzanillo is a popular location for kayaking and is 13 km (8 mi) south along the beach. Choose from a stay in one of our ten Caribbean style casitas nestled in the tropical gardens, the guest house with it’s expansive terrace and jungle view or VIP accommodation in a fully equipped sea view house. To fully experience the beauty and magic of the rainforest there are no TVs in the rooms and wifi is available at the restaurant and lounge. All accommodations have fans and screened ventilation allowing for fresh air and Caribbean breezes around the clock. Our sanctuary is set in a 250 acre Costa Rican Rainforest, yet provides you with the comfort and convenience of a modern resort. It comprises a restaurant, a lounge, a spa, three types of accommodations as well as a Gazebo and Jacuzzi. Each of these elements is integrated harmoniously into the Rainforest and is designed to reinforce your connection to nature.

How to get there

Samasati is located 130 miles from San Jose’ international airport. It is a very scenic drive that will take about 4 hours. We strongly recommend if driving a rented vehicle, that you leave the city of San Jose around noon, the latest at 2 p.m. so you arrive to Samasati during daylight hours. From your starting point, get directions to the Guapiles/Limon Highway. This is a road that winds up into the cloudy mountains of Braulio Carrillo’s National Park, before crossing the Santa Clara flatlands into Puerto Limon. Once you get to Limon, please follow directions to Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. Samasati is 30 miles South of Limón, in the direction of Puerto Viejo. It is located in the Hone Creek village(‘s) area. About five miles after passing the Cahuita National Park’s entrance, you’ll find a street in your right hand side, just between the Gas Station of Hone Creek and the supermarket “Pali”. Samasati’s entrance’s gate is about 1/2 mile inland from the main road. Samasati’s restaurant and accommodations are located 1 mile uphill from the entrance(’s) gate. There is a reception(’s) area at the entrance gate. Here you will find out how to proceed with your 4×4 vehicle, or where to park your car (no fee) and wait for a Samasati vehicle if your vehicle is not a 4X4. This is a excellent run retreat with a fantastic staff and cook. Food was always tasty and plentiful. Lots of wildlife to be seen. If you have the chance stay, you will not be disappointed. It is a bit rustic (which in my opinion only adds to the charm) but there is always hot and cold running water. From Tripadvisor

    "Extraordinary Experience!"
"This is my first review on trip advisor but I couldn't not pay tribute to this wonderful place! I chose Samasati while planning a last minute solo vacation, knowing that I wanted to go to Costa Rica and wanted to practice yoga. What I found was a place truly unlike any other. All the details of booking with Samasati were handled very professionally and efficiently by Liseth whom I communicated with via email and telephone on one occasion. She answered all of my questions and helped me customize a trip that fit the parameters of my coming and going perfectly. I worked out 4 full days of yoga with 5 nights of accommodation and all meals included. She helped me organize transport from limon airport after my local flight (which I recommend if you are trying to do all your international and domestic travel on the same day) and all the details of the trip went extremely smoothly. On arrival, Stephanie the resident yogi was there to greet me at the base of the reserve for the trip up the mountain to the lodge. Samasati's location is simply breathtaking with panoramic views of the bay, ocean, and horizon. It is separate from everything else in the area and you will really feel you've escaped to another world. I stayed in a private casita and absolutely adored the space. It was private, spacious, safe, clean, and so immersed in the rainforest you felt you were under open skies when you closed your eyes at night and listened to all the animal life happening around you. The climate was perfect in October when the rest of the country can be inundated with rain. The area enjoys its own microenvironment throughout the year with morning sun mixing with afternoon showers most days I was there. I loved experiencing both and had the opportunity to both lounge on a hot sandy beach and relax in a hammock on the porch while the rains covered the area. The food was delicious and abundant for every meal! I'm not a vegetarian but thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to eat as one for the week. I never felt there was anything missing from my diet and the dishes were always creative and substantial. All of the staff who work at the resort are friendly and engaging while always allowing for privacy and quiet if that's what you desired. I can't speak highly enough of everyone I encountered during my stay. Finally, my yoga experience with Stephanie. I took part in a private yoga retreat with her which is a one on one twice daily yoga practice in which she designs each day to best suit what you need in that moment. It is difficult to describe what that experience actually looks and feels like unless you just take the chance and commit to doing so yourself. Stephanie is one of the most intuitive, dynamic, and empathetic people I've met and when you couple that with the depth and breadth of yoga and meditation knowledge she draws on, it allows for the creation of a life-changing physical and emotional experience that is unique and personal to you. Thanks to the energy and ability she puts into designing those 4 days I see this trip as a true turning point for me and one that I won't forget years later. If you are at all curious or feel this is something you might need just go for it and let the rest fall into place. Thank you Stephanie and everyone at Samasati for this wonderful adventure. I will always recommend this place to anyone who asks! Pura Vida" - From TripAdvisor
