About the place

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a coastal town in Talamanca in Limón Province in southeastern Costa Rica, known simply as Puerto Viejo to locals. It is a popular tourist destination. It is known in the surfing community for the biggest and most powerful wave in Costa Rica, known as Salsa Brava. It is also home to beautiful beaches, such as Playa Chiquita, Playa Negra, and Punta Uva, which are a few of Costa Rica's most spectacular beaches which can be found between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo. Manzanillo is a popular location for kayaking and is 13 km (8 mi) south along the beach. Choose from a stay in one of our ten Caribbean style casitas nestled in the tropical gardens, the guest house with it’s expansive terrace and jungle view or VIP accommodation in a fully equipped sea view house. To fully experience the beauty and magic of the rainforest there are no TVs in the rooms and wifi is available at the restaurant and lounge. All accommodations have fans and screened ventilation allowing for fresh air and Caribbean breezes around the clock. Our sanctuary is set in a 250 acre Costa Rican Rainforest, yet provides you with the comfort and convenience of a modern resort. It comprises a restaurant, a lounge, a spa, three types of accommodations as well as a Gazebo and Jacuzzi. Each of these elements is integrated harmoniously into the Rainforest and is designed to reinforce your connection to nature.

Food

Sitting in the mountain overlooking the Rainforest and Caribbean Sea below, our open-air restaurant provides a dramatic and unique dining experience. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served buffet style with selections ranging from Caribbean fusion, to Mediterranean to Asian to Central American. Most of our cuisine is vegetarian and chicken and fish delicacies are available whenever you choose. Seafood is drawn daily from sea, fruit is purchased from local farmers or picked on site. From your starting point, get directions to the Guapiles/Limon Highway. This is a road that winds up into the cloudy mountains of Braulio Carrillo’s National Park, before crossing the Santa Clara flatlands into Puerto Limon. Once you get to Limon, please follow directions to Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. Samasati is 30 miles South of Limón, in the direction of Puerto Viejo. It is located in the Hone Creek village(‘s) area. About five miles after passing the Cahuita National Park’s entrance, you’ll find a street in your right hand side, just between the Gas Station of Hone Creek and the supermarket “Pali”. Samasati’s entrance’s gate is about 1/2 mile inland from the main road. Samasati’s restaurant and accommodations are located 1 mile uphill from the entrance(’s) gate. There is a reception(’s) area at the entrance gate. Here you will find out how to proceed with your 4×4 vehicle, or where to park your car (no fee) and wait for a Samasati vehicle if your vehicle is not a 4X4. "Super Relaxation"
"It's a great change of pace from the large resort vacations... just a wonderful low key week to spend in the rainforest with yoga in the morning, hiking trails, jacuzzi, delicious food and just overall relaxing. You are about 10-15 minutes from Puerto Viejo, we went to town a few times, hit up the beach, bars and restaurants, rode bikes around, just a great vacation overall. Staff is very friendly and accommodating (especially with the rides to town and back)." - From TripAdvisor

    "Completely wonderful"
"Best trip I've ever had. Complete quiet from humans, lots of noise from birds and howler monkeys. Just lovely. Saw Capuchin monkeys, a sloth, tons of toucans and other birds, all on the property. Easy to get to local beaches via taxis; also easy to visit national parks, taxis are happy to pick you up when the staff call them to come get you.. Great, great vegetarian food, and coffee available very early in the morning, perfect for bird-watching from the open air deck at the dining hall. Bungalows were lovely--electricity, lots of hot water, and beautiful views of the jungle. No wifi at the bungalows but plenty at the central dining hall, and didn't miss it in the bungalow--too busy lying in the hammock on the veranda, looking at and listening to birds. Free yoga classes available morning and evening, if you want--I don't really do yoga but I enjoyed these. Food is served buffet style, all you want, in the beautiful open air dining room. Wine and beer are available for purchase. Just wonderful." - From TripAdvisor

    "A REAL rainforest getaway"
"I have traveled to Samasati twice and both times my exceptions were met and exceeded. I want to preface this review by saying I am not into yoga, but Samasati is still my favorite resort I have ever been to. Just because it is a yoga retreat doesn't mean you need to do yoga. I certainly didn't 😉 I am a nature nerd, but not enough so to sleep on the ground in a tent. Samasati gives you the full rainforest experience with the comfort of beds and bungalows. The bungalows are glorious. They are huge and mostly screened in so you get a beautiful view of the rainforest and you can even see the ocean in the distance from some bungalows. For me, this Samasati is heaven on earth. You need to take a 4x4 truck up a HUGE hill to get to the resort and you are then completely immersed in nature. You can hear the wildlife all day long - howler monkeys yell in the morning and all night long you will hear the frogs talking to each other. There are bugs and critters everywhere - including in your room. You don't ever have to leave the resort if you don't want to. They have several hiking paths and even a small waterfall for you to explore. If you know where to look, you can spot so much wildlife. On my last visit, I went on a short hike on the property and saw a handful of frog species, several lizards, dozens of birds and even two Capuchin monkeys. On my last day, someone advised me that the easiest time to spot a sloth is at night after it rains - and they were right! Saw my first wild sloth. For others, this situation may not be ideal. I have talked to a lot of people during my stays and most loved it, but two main problems cropped up for people. First if you don't like bugs, you need to learn to like them quickly. Second, if you like to have a night life on vacation, this is not a great place to stay. Because the resort is on top of a hill, the resort has a driver to being guests up and down, but he leaves at 9pm. And no, you can't walk up that hill. It is that big. My other favorite thing about this resort is that it is great for solo women travelers. I never felt unsafe and the staff organized transport for me so I didn't have to worry about driving the 5 hours from San Jose to Samasati with someone sketchy. My only suggestion for the hotel is to bring back the books and field guides they had when I was there two years ago. I was disappointed that there were no reading and reference materials available in the common space anymore." - From TripAdvisor

"Samasati was a lovely jungle respite from home"
