Course description

Our family & surf retreat is a week designed for the family whose kids are a bit older and want a bit more activity on their holiday. Just like our regular yoga surf retreats the days are spent together with our wonderful partner surf school Future Surf in the waves, on the beach, and for those parents who feel the weight of the year in their body, Vale da Lama's swimming pool and hammock, provides a more gentle, relaxing option. There are two yoga sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, they will serve both surfers and nonsurfers, binding the day and the family together. All are enjoyed in the company of other families with Vale da Lama's wonderful food and mind clearing scenery as it's generous backdrop. This family retreat is thought for those families with kids 10 y/o and up, should you have kids smaller than that as well, Vale de Lama's kind babysitters are offered at an additional cost.

About the place

We have chosen to work in a natural organic environment.Vale da Lama is an Eco retreat center where nature and her needs have taken main stage, all integrated in a tasteful beautiful environment where all the food served is organic vegetarian. The resort consists of 9 spacious rooms, all with en suite bathroom. Vale da Lama is a solar passive house, where temperature is controlled without any use of electricity, only by sunlight and firewood. Vale da Lama is a 20 minute walk to the coast or a 40 minute walk to Meia Praia beach.

Food

Our lovely cooks provide the vegetarian meals with fresh vegetables and herbs from the garden. Most food is produced on the farm, organic and seasonal. Other products are mainly from local producers.

Things to do

Growing up in an internal world where questioning was driving, I became an observer of human behavior, my own and those of my surroundings. I tried to understand why we judge so hard, talk bad about each other to only later pretend that we did not. Why what was said was not read in the expression of our eyes. I spent most of my early childhood alone, or maybe just lonely, enhancing my role like an observer. My first teachers in this life were my parents. two extraordinary ordinary folks who loved and still love me fiercely, they taught me my most valuable lesson; that Love can exist without boundaries, it can be unconditional. I did my first meditation retreat when I was 22 and I understood that I was not alone in my pain, that I was ultimately responsible for my own happiness. Many years later, I have chewed, swallowed and occasionally spit out many teachings and ideas but I am still fascinated by what, why and how we do it and what happens next. Life is an open-ended proposal that just keeps expanding as my awareness grows. Endlessly.

I truly don't know and that is ok. But in the not knowing, in the uncompromising acceptance of uncertainty, there is space, space for surprises, for love and wisdom and space for me to grow and become whoever I need to be to meet the moment, regardless of who I was before. I am forever grateful to all those who are inspiring me to take this journey, teachers, and masters from now and before, and to the everyday life heroes that silently put down a stone at a time on the road to love but I have always felt that it was my business to solve the riddle of life. And so I have developed a strong sense of responsibility and self-reliance in my practice and my spiritual path and I suggest you do too, for you know yourself best and you are your best friend. May we inspire each other to be loved and to be free.

  • "Yoga retreat in Paradise"
Our tenth year in Jamaica and fourth visit to Jewel Paradise Cove enjoying daily yoga in our happy place listening to the waves crashing on the breakers! The management and staff will always make an effort to welcome you back home! Bishop starts the day with an early AM power walk and late AM aquatics class. Activities with Samatha and Shericka start at 11 right after breakfast with a wide variety each day. There is always something fun to do or you may choose to head over to the quiet beach. There you will find the singing lifeguard with a charming personality... you can snorkel or just chill. Its always welcoming to find the friendly staff each year that go above and beyond to please. They sincerely love interacting with the guests. Kimali in the Japanese restaurant is very talented with an awesome voice! Linae, Treesha, & Tishane have pleasant personalities as well in the dining room. The bar staff is entertaining and efficient. Yonique has a beautiful personality at the sunset bar. Marlin enjoys the later crowd at the piano bar or bing. Dining under the stars, beach party and the Silver birds offered great entertainment each night. We've already booked next year to our home away from home! - TripAdvisor Review

    "Amazing week in Paradise"
Just got back from this amazing holiday and thought I would share my experience! 1. Transfer We flew into Kingston and we had to arrange our own transfer as there is no shuttle bus service. The hotel charged us ~ 180 USD each way from the airport and the hotel. On top of that, if you want to go through a quicker toll road (which takes 90 minutes as supposed to 150 minutes), then its ~ 20 USD on top of that. So if you are planning on coming to this resort, fly to Montego Bay airport! 2. Hotel We were greeted with a cold towel and refreshing drinks upon arrival. The room itself was looking a little tired but was clean and comfortable. We did not spend much time in the room at all so it didn't really matter. The walk-in shower was modern though and functioned well. The resort itself is very well maintained. Maintenance staff were sweeping leaves / getting rid of seaweed from the beach / painting + redecorating constantly. The resort itself has 3 main pool areas and two lovely beaches so people are spread out and you will never feel cramped. There are lots of nice touches dotted around the resort such as hammocks, swings and lots of other good photo spots! The water slide is really fun too - there aren't any queues most of the time. Nathan who mans the water slide is such a character and he is super fun to hang out with when you are up on the sliding platform. There are lots of activities to do - I did yoga every day at 8 whereas my partner played tennis with a pro every morning. I was surprised that not more people were taking advantage of this and he pretty much got one to one coaching every morning which he loved. The ent team is AMAZING - Samantha, Sherika, Tevorne, Metric, Malvin, Seanday and Kenice have all been so awesome and fun. They constantly get you involved on playing games / beach volley balls etc (but if you want to be left alone, they will). you can get involved as much or as little as you want. They are so much fun and I really enjoyed hanging out with them. I would say the best thing about this resort is the staff here: Dexter who made me amazing cocktails every day, I can't remember his name but a guy who makes smoothie is awesome too, Shandapaul at the coral cafe, Adonis (he is hilarious) from Italian restaurant, Chavon at Platinum restaurant, Ricardo, who was our butler for an evening too! Not to forget the ladies at Irie Cafe! All these people made me feel so at home and was super friendly. 3. Beach The main sea area is probably pretty small and it only goes up to a waist line. However the beach area is much bigger and there are always free sun beds either in the shade/ in the sun. My advice is to get water activities done early on. We went on glass bottom boat and snorkelling twice but I know that some people couldn't do any sessions as the sea became more rough towards the end of their holiday. Paddle boarding and kayaking are good fun too. This resort as a whole is super friendly and I met lots of really nice people! I think the main age group is probably 40 - 60 and there are some younger groups - 25+. I would definitely come back. - TripAdvidor Review

    "Staff is amazing!"
Staff is amazing! Romane and Nathan at the pool are the best! They both work so hard and go above and beyond to make you comfortable and feel welcomed! Rooms could use some upgrading and front desk should recommend booking reservations for restaurants and excursions as soon as you check in .... we missed out on a bunch of opportunities simply because we didn't know everything would fill up so quickly. Overall, a great stay and would return. Again, two thumbs up to Romane and Nathan! Employees of the year for sure! - TripAdvisor Review

  • "Nice trip overall"
Liked: -rooms and grounds of property were cleaned and kept up -enough chairs at the beach and sun for everyone -lots of variety in food choices (although there were only a few restaurants) -the quality of the food was good. The presentation was very nice as well. The service was good in the restaurants. Staff were polite. -there was a maintenance issue with the room when we arrived. It was fixed within a couple of hours of notifying front desk and the staff cleaned up before leaving. -the morning power walk at 7 am -they have professional yoga teachers visiting the resort and teaching classes (although she didn't show up one day when the weather was in question) -the included trip to Konoko Falls. It is steep to walk up but the guide will help and it is not crowded like Dunns Falls. There is also a small zoo and museum on the property. -the sing along in the piano bar was fun -the entertainment was okay (but have seen better at other resorts) -did a tour of the luminous waters. The waters were ok but not as great as the pictures but the trip ran smoothly (except someone on our boat had their smartphone lost / taken from the boat) Could be improved: -a carpenter fixing the stairs on our building asked my husband for $500 as he was passing by. When my husband said no, he asked for $50. My husband said no again. He asked for $10, and my husband said no again. This made it awkward since we had to pass by the worker for a couple days in order to get to our room. -the golf course could be improved, particularly the tees were very hard. -the beds were comfortable but the entire bed moved when one person moved even slightly. -the 2 beaches were small and you could not walk on the beach to nearby resorts or open beach. -there were 3 treadmills in the gym that worked well but the emergency strap did not work in at least 2 of them. -there was only Red Stripe beer available and only one type of red and white wine included (drinkable but not great). -the glass bottom boat ride didn't run for a few days since they needed a part. It also didn't run due to strong waves (acceptable) TripAdvisor Review

    "Awesome resort"
Our stay was close to perfect. Loved our room and view. Food was decent...my boyfriend loved the jerk chicken at the beach grill. Service was pretty good and loved the rafts off the beach. One thing we didn't know was to make reservations for the water activities immediately...we waited to long and all spots were taken. We did take advantage of the free excursion to Konoko Falls and it was beautiful. Very relaxing trip! - TripAdvisor Review

    "You'll want to stay longer!"
Overall fantastic experience. Accommodations were comfortable and beautiful. Staff were polite, friendly, hilarious, charismatic, and sincere. Take advantage of all the on site activities and excursions. Nightlife is a little lacking, but it was not too big of a deal as after all day in the fun hot sun, we were tired and ready for bed. - TripAdvisor Review
