What is Kundalini Yoga?

In the words of Yogi Bhajan, “The process of growth through Kundalini Yoga is a natural unfolding of your own nature. The blocks to that growth are your attachments to the familiarity of the past, and your fear of the expanded Self. As you practice Kundalini Yoga you will grow, like a snake, you will need to shed old skins to be more of who you are.”

Kundalini Yoga is a blend of Bhakti Yoga (the yogic practice of devotion and chanting), Raja Yoga (the practice of meditation/mental and physical control) and Shakti Yoga, (for the expression of power and energy.) As taught by Yogi Bhajan, Kundalini is considered the most comprehensive of yoga traditions, combining meditation, mantra, physical exercises and breathing techniques; it is a Raj Yog, encompassing the eight limbs of yoga into a singular practice of excellence and ecstasy.

Kundalini is probably the most formalized style of yoga currently taught throughout the world. In any class, anywhere in the world, you can expect it to include six major components: 1) tuning-in with the Adi Mantra, 2) pranayama or warm-up, 3) kriya, 4) relaxation, 5) meditation and 6) close with the blessing song.

Kriyas are complete sets of exercises that are performed in the sequences given by the Master. They can be simple short sequences or they may involve vigorous, even strenuous exercises. Strong breath techniques such as Breath of Fire, which challenge and strengthen the nervous and endocrine systems will test the will of the practitioner beyond the limitations of their ego.

Kundalini teacher training programs are available around the world and are especially popular in USA, Bali, Europe, Canada, and India.

One of the most popular Kundalini schools is the Kundalini Research Institute. The KRI offers a tri-level program, which is one of the most extensive offerings at this time.

Level One is a 220-hour professional certification program in Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan; Level two is a 300-hour certification program consisting of five, 62-hour modules. Graduates of Level Two earn the title of KRI Certified Practitioner of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan® and combined with Level One certification and fulfill the Yoga Alliance RYT 500-hour requirement.  Level Three challenges you to live the life you were meant to live. A 1000-day commitment to the process of realization through connection with the spiritual community, deep meditation and service.

KRI’s mission is to uphold and preserve the authenticity, integrity, and accuracy of the Teachings of Yogi Bhajan through training, research, publishing, and resources.

Brand new to Kundalini? As a beginner, one of the most powerful things you can learn is meditation, kriya, or mantra. Attire is also important to the practice, it is recommended to wear white, but if you aren’t ready for that, it’s ok if you practice in another color that makes you comfortable. As you deepen your practice, you’ll find that wearing white may come more naturally to you.
