What’s on the Menu? Italy Edition

We have all had pasta and pizza before (hopefully!), and we have probably heard the stereotypes about apron wearing grandmothers crouched over bubbling saucepans. But those of us who haven’t visited Italy and tried the authentic versions of these dishes are in for a real treat. From the simple pizza Margarita to the decadent Spaghetti alla Carbonara to heavenly homemade Gelato, Italy is truly a food-lover’s paradise. The only problem we think you’ll run into in Italy is not being able to try all the foods you want to before you leave. To help you pick out some of the best, though, we’ve put together a brief list of some of the highlights of Italian Cuisine you should be sure to try when you visit.

Pizza Margarita

Pizza is truly the food of Italy, and Pizza Margarita is the purest and most unadulterated version of this amazing dish. We promise that a Margarita Pizza in Italy will be unlike any you’ve had before!

Pasta!

There’s so many unique pastas to try while you’re in Spain, and most people who have experienced western cuisine have probably tried a few varieties of noodles and sauces. Still, eating these pastas in Italy is a whole new experience! So forget what you think you know about pasta and make sure to try all your favorite kinds of noodles and sauces. From Spaghetti to Farfalle, Bucatini to Rigatoni, there’s a huge variety of noodles, and each of them is paired with its own delicious sauce. When you’re in Italy, you have to try the pasta, because it’s the birthplace of the dish after all.

Coffee

Italian coffee calls to mind thin, Italian business men in suits standing at a bar, grabbing a shot of espresso and taking it like a shot on their way to work. Though this is not the way most people have learned to enjoy their coffee, it can be a great way to experience it in Italy! Especially since many coffee shops charge extra for a drink if you take it to sit down and enjoy instead of on the run. Of course, if you’re in the mood to chat and relax, Italy is also famous as a pioneer of other coffee drinks, and if you’re a coffee drinker you’ll love their Cappuccinos, Lattes and Macchiatos.

Tiramisu

This classic Italian dessert will leave you longing for more–it’s a creamy coffee cake made of lady fingers dipped in coffee and topped with a delicious mixture of cream, cocoa and mascarpone cheese. This dessert is paired perfectly with a coffee for sipping at the end of a long day.
