Behind the Studio
My family moved to Muswell Hill from Hong Kong when I was 12 and I’ve watched it change and develop into the vibrant community that it is today. As a young adult I moved around of course – living all over London and with stints abroad – but somehow I have found my way back here and it feels very much like home.
Opening Hilltop Studio in the very heart of Muswell Hill is something of a dream for me. I knew I wanted somewhere to bring my two passions of photography and yoga together. I knew I wanted to create a space that was uplifting, relaxing and nourishing – a place that could provide a break from the daily grind, a little oasis of calm in this fast-paced urban jungle of ours – and when I found Hilltop Studio, I knew this unique little space would be absolutely perfect.
My personal journey here has been a long and winding one. I spent the best part of 15 years producing documentaries for television. It was a fantastic experience taking me to weird and wonderful places around the world and meeting some extraordinary people. I quickly realised however, with the birth of my first daughter, that my old life and new life were not compatible.
Like all new parents, I took endless pictures of my beautiful new baby and in doing so quickly discovered I had found a new love – photography! After the birth of my second daughter I decided to take the plunge, signing up to courses and practicing on anyone I could get to sit still long enough. My photography business was launched. To begin with I focused mainly on family photography – including pregnancy, newborns, children, and classic family portraits. This is still something of an obsession of mine and very much the basis of photography at Hilltop Studio. But, in addition to this, Hilltop Photography is also commissioned to do standalone portraits, corporate headshots, yoga and fitness promo shots, weddings and other creative projects.
Alongside photography, my other big love is yoga! I had practiced for many years but it wasn’t till after the birth of my second child that I decided I wanted to take it deeper, recognising the incredible benefits of yoga in a busy and demanding life. I started my teacher-training course, qualifying with the amazing Yoga London teaching school.
With two strings to my bow, I felt ready to take a massive leap to faith and venture out on my own, setting up Hilltop Studio in November 2016. It is a creative and inspiring environment with beautiful uplifting light and terrific views over London. It is perfect for photography, perfect for yoga, perfect for me and, I hope, perfect for everyone who walks through its doors.
I have a stunning natural light studio, a smaller space with controllable light for all your photography needs and a team of excellent yoga instructors offering a variety of styles – check out our timetable below.
